Corpus Christi, TX – Several Injured in SPID Crash Near Weber Rd

Corpus Christi, TX (April 16, 2025) – A Sunday afternoon collision in Corpus Christi led to multiple injuries, including two women who suffered life-threatening trauma when they were struck outside a stalled vehicle.

Officers with the Corpus Christi Police Department responded to the 3700 block of SPID westbound near the Weber Road on-ramp around 12:15 p.m. on April 13. Upon arrival, first responders discovered two adult women, ages 41 and 20, who had sustained major injuries. Both women were transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment.

According to police reports, the vehicle the two women had been traveling in stalled on the on-ramp. The women exited the vehicle and were standing in front of it when a second vehicle, driven by a 28-year-old man, entered the ramp and collided with the stalled car. The impact reportedly threw the women forward, causing severe injuries.

Also inside the stalled vehicle were five minors: two teenagers, aged 14 and 13, and three younger children, including a 3-year-old, a 1-year-old, and an infant. Emergency medical teams transported all five children to a local hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. The crash led to a full closure of SPID in the area for nearly three hours as investigators with the department’s Traffic Unit examined the scene and gathered evidence. The investigation remains active as officials continue to work to determine all contributing factors in the collision.

We hope everyone injured in this accident makes a full and speedy recovery.

Car Accidents in Texas

Corpus Christi, TX - Several Injured in SPID Crash Near Weber RdTexas consistently ranks among the states with the highest number of traffic crashes each year. In 2023, the Texas Department of Transportation reported over 15,000 serious injury crashes across the state. With its vast network of highways and busy urban centers, Texas drivers face high risks, especially when navigating ramps and interchanges. These zones are often prone to crashes caused by speeding, distractions, or vehicle failures.

In light of this latest incident, we wanted to take a closer look at how vehicle malfunctions can contribute to crashes in Texas:

  • Stalled Vehicles on Roadways: Stalling is a leading factor in secondary crashes, especially when vehicles break down in high-speed zones or on-ramps. When a vehicle suddenly stops or loses power, it often leaves little time for oncoming traffic to react, increasing the chances of a collision. Drivers should immediately activate hazard lights and move to the shoulder when possible.
  • Ramp Entry Dangers: Merging onto busy highways requires full attention. Sudden acceleration, poor visibility, or misjudging traffic speed can lead to rear-end collisions or more serious crashes, particularly when stationary vehicles are on the ramp. Awareness and cautious driving during ramp entry are crucial for safety.
  • Child Passengers and Safety Risks: Children are especially vulnerable in vehicle collisions. Proper use of car seats and seat belts can greatly reduce injuries, but unexpected crashes still pose a serious risk. Emergency responders prioritize assessing pediatric patients during crashes to ensure swift medical care.
  • Scene Clearance Times: Major crashes often lead to extended road closures. These shutdowns are necessary for safety assessments, evidence collection, and safe towing operations. While delays can be frustrating, they play a vital role in preventing secondary incidents and ensuring thorough investigations.
  • Legal Implications of Ramp Collisions: Crashes involving stalled vehicles may involve complex legal questions about fault. In Texas, these cases often hinge on whether a driver took reasonable steps to avoid a collision or acted negligently.
